Journal writing is neither a competition nor a skill that you need to win or hone; it is simply a way for you to seek refuge with yourself at the end of each long day and let your writings speak for all that your mind has to reflect upon.

Some people might find it difficult to start a journal because they just don’t know what to write. Keeping in mind how journal writing is not something that needs to be taught and has no particular format to it, the following tips can really help you out if you wish to start-off or need some guidance to do so.
Keep The Journal Near And Accessible
Your personal diary should be kept at a place such that it is an arm’s length away from your final lying position at the end of the day and yet secured enough for you to remain unconcerned about somebody invading your privacy. If you have a chest of drawers or side shelf right beside your bed, it is best to keep your journal there so that every time you call it a night you know exactly what to do next.

The best way to make journal writing impactful is to make sure that it is indeed the last thing you do each night.
Consistency Over Lengthiness
Nobody else except for people you allow to do so shall be reading your journal, so why should you be concerned with elements like the length of your writing or the vocabulary you use in it? Some days can be uneventful and accumulate only a line or two and others might need several pages; it depends on your moods, willingness at the moment, and just how much you want to give away to the journal you are writing in.

What can really develop your habit is consistency. It is important to understand that there is no compulsion on you of being a journal writer because at the end of the day it is for your personal satisfaction, but in order to make it a part of your life and be proud of it in the future, you need to devote time to it regularly.
Stay True To Yourself
If you are just beginning to keep a journal, you might be tempted to make it as decorated and meaningful as possible and in the process there is a chance that you end up changing the entire meaning of what journal writing is all about.

Do not be fake or write for the sake of telling others; make it a part of yourself, be yourself and write only if it means something deep to you.
Use Your Journal
What can keep you motivated as far as maintaining a journal or a diary is the fact that you actually take the time to make it a part of your life. During your day, keep your journal in the back of your mind when you experience things you want to document that night. Look forward to your personal time when you can write and reflect on your day. Otherwise after a few writings you will end up feeling that it is more of a self-assumed ordeal than a relief.

Read what you write, understand the depth of the event/feeling that your words represented, and incorporate what you learn into your personality as a better being.
